In 2008 in the U.S., 7,500 teenagers drank alcohol for the first time; 4,360 teenagers used an illicit drug for the first time; 3,900 teenagers smoked cigarettes and nearly as many, 3,700, smoked marijuana, all for the first time. In a study known as "A Day in the Life American Adolescents: Substance Use Facts Update," conducted by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), this is a stark approximation of what's happening in the adolescent life of Americans aged 12 to 17 years.
